Last weekend I had the pleasure of entertaining my brother and his family. Our dinners together never seem to happen as often as I know we all would like, therefore, I try to make them special. Especially for my two nieces, Maya (3) and Danika (6).
I wanted the table to be something interesting and fun to hold the girls attention through dinner. I set the table with old, pink, monogrammed linens and mismatched silverware. My pheasant salt & pepper shakers always seem to work well on any table I set.
Now for the food!
It was a Friday night, so the menu had to be something I could quickly assemble after work. To start, I choose to serve one of my all-time favorite salads, Balsamic Fig and Arugula. Our main course was Beef Burgundy, served over a bed of buttered egg noodles. We definitely could have used some crusty, garlic rubbed bread to soak up the delicious gravy…next time!
Both recipes are from Americas Test Kitchen. You will hear me talk often about ATK in this blog, I love their well written and researched recipes, always reliable and packed with flavor. If you have never watched their public television series or read any of their magazines/books, I suggest you do so!
The Beef Burgundy, also know as Beef Bourguignon, is equally, if not more delicious when it is prepared the day before, refrigerated and reheated before serving. This way I was able to relax and attend to other details in the hours before everyone’s arrival. The stew is also appealing to the children when served over the buttered egg noodles.
Lastly, dessert was Chocolate Banana Crumb Cake from Ina Garten’s newest, appropriately titled, ‘Make it Ahead’. In the recipe notes she mentions that her and her staff could not stop eating it while testing the recipe, I would say my family and I were no exception. It is quick to make, and can easily be made one or even two days ahead of time.
I was having so much fun, that I forgot to take any pictures of the food…FAIL. Instead, here are a few of my favorite things that I used to serve the dessert.
Thanks for visiting! Till next time…
